Interpreting the Bible From A Distance

Wednesday, May 9th, 2012

So, we’re Christians. We go to church, we study the Bible, and we try to live morally.

We are all consumed with sin, no doubt, so it is a constant battle to try and live the way Jesus did. Impossible, really.

Something a lot of us do, though, is read the stories in the Bible and try to interpret the message… from a distance. Without always taking into account the fact that we are the people described in the Bible, we often (secretly) find comfort in comparing ourselves and deciding that we aren’t as damaged as some of them.

Science and the 10 Plagues of Egypt

I like hearing about people’s different interpretations of Exodus during the 10 plagues of Egypt. You often find people who are opposed to any correlation between the Bible and science, as well as people who think it all goes hand-in-hand. We know as Christians that our relationship with Jesus Christ is the most important relationship that we can have. To ask it simply, how much time do you invest in God on a regular basis?

Understanding the Bible

Know what’s strange? The Bible.

Yes, the Bible is strange. Think about it. Many people think they know the Bible from what others have told them or from what they have learned in church, but it’s not an easy book to read. Unless you have studied the entire thing, it’s bound to still surprise you… even if you’ve grown up going to church.

The Bible isn’t necessarily a book that you read front to back, either. Many people recommend reading it in sections, and many have their own ideas about what to read first. It is a very inspirational, loving, wise, and true book. It is also dark, sad, and somewhat disturbing.
